Otae-san wa Kyou mo Tabetai - Cannibalism Madness.

Otae-san wa Kyou mo Tabetai started in issue 2017-17, written and illustrated by Amayama Maya. It currently has 10 chapters as of the latest issue.

The series was shocking at first and by having a dark theme such as cannibalism in it's first chapter. Naturally, with a theme like cannibalism the series has grotesque imagery paired up with the strong art with bold lines, it has significant visual impact. It also uses quite often panels with an excess in black tone and monstrous or distorted faces to add a horror feeling.

The main character is called Kanafuri Rubi and is chasing after his sister who after they made a wish to a strange girl who had mysterious powers and it resulted in wakening a cannibalistic appetite in both him and his sister, beni. The Mimic represent that appetite for human flesh and are attached to them back by a strange rope. Otae-san from the title is the main character's Mimic who was named and it represents his appetite for human flesh which he keeps restrained. A key feature of this manga for better or for worst is it's blistering pace at the start. It moved rather rapidly with the quick introduction of various other characters in a similar situation to the main character and his sister and the appearance of an antagonist to form a short introductory arc.

Part of the issue and why this series is possibly failing is the fast transition and ambiguity that results into the reader becoming lost. One example is the time skip that happens from chapter 1 to chapter 2 which isn't made clear and relies on the reader making the assumption or reading into the story and for a shonen manga that can be problematic.

Recently, the latest chapters have seen an much different feel. It slowed significantly from the initial chapters it is possibly a breather for a eventual second arc. Also the revelation that there are other's like the strange girl, the main character met, who grant Mimics to people.

Otae-san wa Kyou mo Tabetai is not a bad series and it's theme is unique to say the least. But it's first arc should have been better organised. The latest chapters have shown more coherence but they have been rather slice of life and harem antics centered. The series chance of success seems remote but I will read it to the end.
